The season has shifted.
Snow, ice and shorter daylight hours change how I move through the days.
Cold seeps into my fingers when biking and eyelashes freeze. There’s beauty in it though. Interesting shapes appear frozen into puddles, patterns show up in the snow and the lack of reflection on the water after a whole summer of brightness makes me do a double take. I keep catching myself studying these icy marks and storing them away. There might be something new growing from those shapes.
Its been an interesting month
Against this backdrop, I’ve been settling into this new website space, learning how everything works and slowly finding my pace here. There has been plenty of planning, plenty of computer time and watching more website tutorial videos that I care to admit, but little by little things are starting to fall into place.
The grant application and what comes next
One of the bigger things on my plate has been the grant application. November is the month for applying and it’s take up most of my thoughts. However it’s tied to such an exciting project that it feels worth every hour. I won’t go into too much detail yet, but we’re hoping for an exhibition slot here in Jakobstad 2027. Even writing that feels a bit unreal.
Changes in the studio
In the meantime, there has also been changes to my studio world too. Alongside the small studio I have at home, I’m shaping a second workspace where the kiln will live. Yes, a new kiln. It has arrived already! But we are still working on practical matters. Planning, fixing, gathering tools and supplies. Just very steady and satisfying progress. I’m working with wonderful partners on this poject and we keep finding new ideas as we go and we are delighted with our own progress and all the new things we are learning along the way. I’m already enjoying the thought of having more room for the creative process and having the kiln right there will be far more convenient.
Where the work is going
As for actual sculpture work, I have to be honest. It has been more computer than clay lately. Even so, I have nine new pieces almost ready. Two others are already in Helsinki for an exhibition arranged by our local art club. The club, Jakarte, have just won the Östrobothnian Art Prize for it’s creative and active work, which feels well deserved.
And in December I’ll head to Turku for the New Design Christmas Market. It’s my first time taking part in a larger event like this and I’m curious and excited to see who I might meet there.
Finding the rhythm
With the website up, new business cards in hand, the new kiln and new sculptures ready soon, it feels like things are quietly gathering momentum. I’m still learning how to balance all of this. Some days it works, some days I just run out of time! Blocking out tasks in my calendar (old school paper version!) is the only way to get through the more tedious paperwork tasks and keep my focus on the way forward. Maybe I’m not the only one who works that way?
